Chicago Rapper "Blood Money" Slain In West Englewood
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A Chicago rapper was shot and killed Wednesday night outside his home in West Englewood, just weeks after signing a record contract.
CBS 2's Susanna Song reports 30-year-old Mario Hess – who also went by the stage names Blood Money and Big Glo – was shot in the chest outside his family's home in the 5600 block of South Elizabeth Street around 9:30 p.m.
A cousin who was with him, 28-year-old Darnell Patton – also was shot in the abdomen, and underwent surgery overnight, and his condition had stabilized by Thursday morning.
Hess, a father of five, had recently returned from Los Angeles, where he signed a record contract two weeks ago with Interscope Records.
He's a cousin of Chicago rapper Chief Keef, and was featured in one of his cousin's songs.
"He wasn't one of those types where he felt as like he made it and he was too good for us," said his neighbor, Tarsha Glenn. "He was right here with us still, day before yesterday. That's how he got killed last night, because he's representing his hood."
A relative said she believes Hess was shot out of jealousy.
"He made it. He made it, and they was mad. … He had a lot of people just jealous of him, and it's sad," Allena Taylor said. "He came from nothing to that, look at him. He didn't deserve that at all; neither one of them, Darnell neither."
