Chicago Principal Uses Advanced Education Degree In Early Childhood Education

When it comes to educating our nation's youth, the process of early childhood education makes for a strong foundation to build upon. Lynn Lawrence, principal of North Park Elementary School (NPES), knows better than anyone how influential a quality education can be for a child in molding their future.

How does your background in education relate to your current position?

"I earned a B.A. in Elementary Education and an M.A. in Educational Leadership. I've been the principal at North Park Elementary School since 1989, a private non-sectarian school that offers an academically challenging curriculum integrating the best elements of traditional instruction, experiential learning and state-of-the-art technology. I taught 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades for CPS (Chicago Public Schools) and have taught at NPES for six years."

What inspired you to enter this field?

"From the time I was six years old, my older sister and I played 'school.' I always enjoyed being around young children and regularly babysit for children in the neighborhood. In college, I observed and volunteered at several elementary schools. As soon as I realized that every day I would be reaping incredible rewards in the form of young people realizing their potential, overcoming hurdles and achieving their goals and dreams, I knew I wanted to be a teacher."

How has your education helped you achieve success in your field?

"I have a more in-depth understanding of how children, educators and parents serve as such an important role in working together for the benefit of our children, while inspiring and encouraging them to strive for greatness, live to their fullest potential and see the best in themselves. That's what NPES is today, that is what I have seen work in my 24 years as principal and what drives me to strive for success each and every day of my career."
