Chicago Politicians Attend Cupich's Elevation To Cardinal
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Parishioners and politicans from across Illinois flocked to Rome to watch archbishop of Chicago, Blase Cupich be elevated to cardinal by the pope and receive his red hat.
Amongst them was Chicago mayor, Rahm Emanuel who discusses his admiration for the new cardinal.
"He has a voice of tolerance," Emaunel said. "In a time where intolerance is gaining credence. He has a voice in inclusion in a time where exclusion is gaining credence."
Governor Bruce Rauner and Senate President John Cullerton also made the trek to Rome.
Governor Rauner tweeted, "Awe inspiring ceremony in St. Peter's Basilica this morning. Congratulations to our newly elevated Cardinal Cupich."
It is unlikely Governor Rauner and Senate President Cullerton discussed the impasse over the state budget, but Rauner said the trip was a step in the right direction.
