Chicago Police Team Up With Feds To Target Violent Crime
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Chicago police teamed up with the FBI, Homeland Security, and the Drug Enforcement Administration this weekend in an effort to cut crime in the city.
At least five people were killed and 32 others were wounded in shootings across the city from Friday afternoon to Monday morning, but police said they made headway in the fight against gun violence with some important arrests.
A joint anti-violence mission with the feds snagged a man police called one of the Ogden District's most dangerous offenders.
Aruturo Reveles, 39, was arrested on felony counts of aggravated assault and aggravated discharge of a firearm, after allegedly shooting at another man who was parking his vehicle in the Little Village neighborhood on Sunday. The man in the car was not wounded.
Police said officers responding to a call of shots fired at 24th and Rockwell saw a car fleeing the scene, so they pulled it over, and arrested Reveles. The victim identified Reveles as the shooter, according to police.
A judge set bail for Reveles at $750,000 on Sunday. Reveles was due back in court on Nov. 18.
The officers who made the arrest were part of the department's "Strategic Anti-Violence Mission," which began Friday night. The effort involved traffic stops, police serving arrest warrants, and officers visiting people they believe can leave the gang life if provided the proper resources. The coordination with federal authorities focused on the Ogden, Gresham, and Austin districts on the South and West sides.
According to police, officers seized 12 weapons and arrested 44 people, 16 of those for felonies including: three for unlawful use of a weapon by a felon and one suspect wanted in a September murder.
