CPD officer hit by car, police fire shots on DuSable Lake Shore Drive near Museum Campus
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Shots were fired by police on DuSable Lake Shore Drive near the Museum Campus Friday night after a Chicago Police officer was hit by a car.
As CBS 2's Charlie De Mar reported, the officer was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital for their injuries. The incident also shut down DuSable Lake Shore Drive between Balbo Drive and 18th Street.
On police radio, there was a report of shots fired both at and by the police at DuSable Lake Shore Drive and Roosevelt Road.
Chicago Police focused much of their attention on a black sedan, which appeared to be spun out of control at that junction. Police say it matched the description of a vehicle wanted in connection to an aggravated battery to another police officer earlier this month.
After curbing the vehicle, the driver of the vehicle reversed and struck an officer who was approaching on foot.
The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) said it was investigating after a Chicago Police officer fired their gun. Police said nobody was hit by the gunfire.
It was unclear if shots were actually fired at officers as that initial dispatch report claimed.
Police radio indicated that the injured officer was struck by a car. The officer was taken to an area hospital with a broken leg and is expected to recover.
After the incident on DuSable Lake Shore Drive, the Chicago Police helicopter and other officers followed the car in which the suspects were riding to the area of 71st Street and Vincennes Avenue.
After a short foot chase, the driver from the vehicle along with another suspect were taken into custody. A weapon was also recovered.
As for now, the incident is being investigated by COPA with full cooperation of the Chicago Police Department. The Officer involved will be placed on routine administrative duties for a period of 30 days.
