Chicago Police Get In The Halloween Spirit, Offer Safe Alternatives To Trick-Or-Treaters
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Half a dozen Chicago Police districts will offer trick-or-treaters a safe alternative to going door-to-door today.
WBBM Newsradio's Regine Schlesinger reports five stations will open their doors to children as a safe haven, and officers will host a cookout at a public park in one other district.
For example, at the Grand Crossing District station, officers will be giving away candy for what they call Halloween Fright Night; in the South Chicago District, kids can join officers for crafts, movies and candy.
The Calumet District on the far South Side will have a haunted house from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The Albany Park District station plans a petting zoo, pony wheel, and candy stations set up in the parking lot from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
At the Rogers Park District station, officers will hand out candy and glow sticks to trick-or-treaters.
In the Deering District, at the Cornell Square Park gym at 1809 W. 50th St., police will host a basketball tournament and cookout, and will hand out candy from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Police advise, for a safe Halloween, children should stick to community, church, and school-sponsored events. They should eat only candy that's wrapped, after it has been checked by an adult. Children also should stay out of abandoned buildings and deserted areas, and dress in clothing that will show up in the dark.
