Man Shot, Wounded By CPD After Police Say He Fired At Officers In Rogers Park
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A man was shot by Chicago Police late Tuesday afternoon in Rogers Park, after police say he fired at officers.
Chicago Police said the incident happened around 5 p.m. at Lunt and Ravenswood avenues and the Rogers Park Metra Union Pacific-North station.
Chicago Police Deputy Chief of Operations Randall Darlin said at 5 p.m. Tuesday, tactical officers from the Rogers Park (24th) District were conducting a follow-up investigation into a domestic incident. They found the suspect's vehicle and conducted an investigatory stop, Darlin said.
The suspect got out of the vehicle and started firing at officers, Darlin said. The officers returned fire and struck the man, Darlin said.
An officer issued a frantic radio call: "Shots fired, Ravenswood, Ravenswood and Lunt! We need an ambulance! We need an ambulance! Shots fired! Shots fired!"
The officers immediately provided assistance until the Fire Department arrived, Darlin said. The man was taken to AMITA Health St. Francis Hospital in Evanston in an unknown condition.
No officers were injured, but four officers were taken to the hospital for what police called a "well-being check."
Police said a gun was recovered at the scene, which remained active as of late Tuesday night.
Police tweeted a photo of the gun they recovered.
The Civilian Office of Police Accountability was also on the scene late Tuesday, Darlin said. The officers involved will go on 30-day routine administrative duties.
This was the 72nd time this year that officers have been fired upon, Darlin said.
