"The officers approached to investigate," said Chicago Police Chief of Detectives Eugene Roy. "They were confronted by an armed individual and shots were exchanged. The offender was fatally wounded and a weapon was recovered."
Police say no officers were injured.
CBS 2's Derrick Blakley reports the house where the shooting took place was Derrick Rose's childhood hime, but at least two families have lived there since.
Neighbors say, a woman, her mother and her two-year-old son now occupy Rose's old home.
Others note the neighborhood has been plagued by a rash of burglaries, leading residents on edge. Shell Dotson was visiting her sister's house.
"She just had her alarm system going on yesterday because of the break-ins going on in this block," she said.
The man killed in the shooting is identified as 29-year-old Charles Smith, who lived in the 2100 block of West 77th Street.
The Independent Police Review Authority is investigating.
