Chicago Once Again Has Nation's Highest Gas Prices

CHICAGO (CBS) -- With prices creeping up, Chicago once again has the distinction of having the most expensive gas in the country.

As WBBM Newsradio's Regine Schlesinger reports, the latest Lundberg Survey finds over the past two weeks, the price at the pump has inched up 6 cents a gallon.

"Regular grade now averages $3.67. It's up 6 cents in the past two weeks, due mostly to slightly higher crude oil prices," said Trilby Lundberg of the Lundberg Survey.

She says the highest price is in Chicago, at an average of $4.02 a gallon. The lowest is in Tucson, Ariz., at $3.32.

But oil analyst Peter Beutel expects prices to start coming down again soon.

"We probably will see gasoline prices drop 15 cents or so a gallon by Halloween, based on the switch from summer grade to winter grade," Beutel said.

Unfortunately, increasing weakness in the U.S. and global economy will also play a role in the drop in prices, he said.

ChicagoGasPrices.com says at the extremes Monday, the lowest gas prices were found at the Costco at 8400 W. North Ave. in Melrose Park, and the Sam's Club at 141 W. North Ave. in Northlake, both of which had a price of $3.72 a gallon. The highest price was at the BP station at 755 W. Lawrence Ave. near Lake Shore Drive, where gas was going for $4.49 per gallon.
