Chicago On Pace For Record Number Of Bank Robberies

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Chicago is having a banner year for bank robberies.

The FBI says it is a pace that is expected to see the city pass 200 bank robberies by the time the year is out.

The agency says most of the robberies are pulled off by people to support gambling or substance abuse debts.

Agents say that robbers hit banks because they believe that is where they will get the most money. But the FBI says the average bank robber gets five hundred to a thousand dollars.

The FBI says 75 percent of them are caught and they can face up to 20 years in prison.
