Police fire shots during traffic stop in Englewood, officer wounded in hand
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A Chicago police officer was shot in the hand after officers fired shots during a traffic stop in Englewood Monday evening.
Interim Chicago Police Supt. Fred Waller said at 7:40 p.m., officers were conducting a traffic stop in the 5600 block of South Shields Avenue when an officer was shot.
Police said the suspect vehicle reversed, striking the squad car, and fled the scene.
"During the incident, officers discharged their firearms," according to a police news release.
Police did not report that any shots were fired at officers.
His partners took the officer to the University of Chicago Medical Center for a gunshot wound to the left hand. Waller said he spoke to the officer, who was in good spirits Monday evening.
Two other officers were taken to the hospital as a precaution.
The suspect escaped from the traffic stop, Waller said. He said a second crime scene at 91st Street and Princeton Avenue miles to the south was believed to be related to the incident – but it was unclear how.
There were reports the suspect's car might have crashed in that second location.
As CBS 2's Marybel González reported, officers went door-to-door asking residents for surveillance video.
One witness who lives on the block says she was heading out when she suddenly heard two gunshots.
"As I got in the car, here come five police officers coming down the street – zooming down the street – so I'm like, what's going on?" said Renee Reynolds. "All of a sudden, they jumped out, and one of the police officers hollered out, and the next thing you know, it was, 'Boom, boom.'"
Reynolds said her biggest concern was the safety of those outside. She said many kids were out playing at the time of the incident.
