Chicagoans enjoy record-tying heat in late October
CHICAGO (CBS) – In Chicago, 83 degrees and sunny sounds pretty good for a summer day, but is highly unusual for fall.
Those were the record-tying conditions for Tuesday. CBS 2's Noel Brennan drew the short straw and spent his day at the beach.
"When there's beautiful weather, you should get outside and enjoy it," said Lauren Carter.
The colors said fall, but the conditions screamed summer.
Halloween may have been a week away, but 83 degrees In Chicago felt more like the Fourth of July.
"It's nice to be outside in the sun," said Carter.
Carter, her friend Tabby Pierce, and all of their kids didn't expect to plan a picnic at North Avenue Beach on Oct. 24.
"October came in really cold, and so we're happy for a warm day to be out and be in the sun, so," she said.
But Chicago has seen similar conditions back in 1963.
It was a sunny day worthy of the front page of the Chicago Sun-Times. "Swimming trunks and snow fences don't usually go together," the caption read.
Chicago reached 83 degrees that day. The year before, in 1962, there was snow on Oct. 24.
Carter said Lake Michigan felt "really chilly, but it still feels good!"
Tuesday tied the 60-year-old record, and at least at North Avenue Beach, patrons were soaking it in.
