Candidates For Mayor Want New Police Chief
CHICAGO (CBS) -- No matter who wins the race for mayor of Chicago, the city's top cop is virtually assured of being out of a job in the next few months.
All four top candidates for mayor have said they'd bring in someone to replace Police Supt. Jody Weis, whose contract expires in March -- two months before a new mayor is sworn in.
On Tuesday, presumptive frontrunner Rahm Emanuel said it's important if he's elected to have a "fresh start" and pick a new top cop when Weis' contract runs out.
City Clerk Miguel del Valle, who is also running for mayor, also said Tuesday that he would replace Weis if elected.
Earlier in the campaign, candidates Gery Chico and Carol Moseley Braun said they want to bring in a new superintendent.
Emanuel said that Weis has indicated he plans to leave when his contract expires. Weis couldn't be reached for comment Tuesday, but said as recently as Friday that he wants to keep his job.
