Chicago Marathon Will Use Lottery To Fill 15,000 Remaining Spots
CHICAGO (CBS) – Organizers of the Chicago Marathon will hold a lottery to fill the remaining 15,000 spots for the 2013 race, following computer problems earlier this month that suspended registration.
Individuals can submit one lottery entry each beginning 12:01 a.m. Tuesday until 9 p.m. Thursday March 7, according to an announcement posted on the marathon's website. Names will be randomly selected, with winners notified March 12.
"While this is a departure from our traditional registration process, we believe it is the most fair and efficient way to address this unique situation," the announcement said.
The marathon ran into trouble right after it opened online registration Feb. 19. Some applicants couldn't register, while others said they were charged the $175 fee multiple times.
The mess has been blamed on major computer issues at Active.com, which handles registration as well as sponsorship donations for runners.
The race has become hugely popular and has been filling up faster ever year. The race can accommodate 45,000 runners. This year's race is Oct. 13.
