Chicago Man Fit To Stand Trial For Rape Of 3-Year-Old
WAUKEGAN, Ill. (STMW) -- A Chicago man charged with sexually assaulting a 3-year-old north suburban girl last fall has been found mentally fit to stand trial.
Jose Reyes, 28, is charged with multiple counts of aggravated criminal sexual assault of a child, aggravated kidnapping and production of child pornography. If convicted, he faces 24 years to life in prison.
At the request of defense attorneys Catherine Hatch and Eric Rinehart, Lake County Judge Mark Levitt ordered an evaluation earlier this year to determine Reyes' fitness for trial.
At a hearing Wednesday morning, it was revealed the evaluation found Reyes fit to stand trial. Both the prosecution and defense agreed the report was acceptable.
Reyes is scheduled for trial Aug. 19, and Levitt scheduled a status hearing for June 19.
Reyes, who had worked in Libertyville, was arrested Oct. 2, 2013, after the 3-year-old girl was taken Sept. 30 from a condominium complex at 555 Deepwoods Dr. in Mundelein.
According to police, the toddler was walking with her 28-year-old mother, who was carrying an infant son, and her older sister to a building in Diamond Lake Condominiums just prior to the abduction.
She was missing for about 30 minutes before she was returned to the area.
Reyes is being held in the Lake County Jail on a $5 million bond.
