Chicago Man Critically Injured In I-65 Crash In Northwest Indiana
CROWN POINT, Ind. (CBS) -- A man was critically injured Monday evening in a single-vehicle rollover crash near Crown Point, Indiana.
About 6:40 p.m., the 23-year-old Chicago man was driving a 2005 Pontiac Grand Am north on I-65 in the left lane about three miles south of the Crown Point exit, when he changed lanes from the left to the right and drove off the road onto the gravel, according to a statement from Indiana State Police.
The man then overcorrected, lost control of the car and ran the Pontiac off the road a second time, police said. The car rolled multiple times and the driver, who wasn't wearing a seatbelt, was thrown from the vehicle.
The man landed about 60 feet away from the Pontiac, in a ditch on the east side of the road, police said. He suffered life-threatening injuries in the crash and was initially taken to St. Anthony Health in Crown Point, then later airlifted to Memorial Hospital of South Bend.
The Pontiac's passenger, a 20-year-old woman from Rensselaer, Indiana, was wearing a seatbelt and was taken to St. Anthony Health with injuries that were not thought to be life-threatening, police said.
Police believe alcohol may have played a role in the crash.
