Chicago Man Arrested After Stealing Ambulance, Crashing In Wisconsin
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A Chicago man was arrested in Wisconsin this week, after crashing a stolen ambulance, stealing the car of a passerby who stopped to help, and then attacking sheriff's deputies while in custody.
Police in Wisconsin said 23-year-old Michael Buckner caused a stolen ambulance to roll over on its side on Interstate 43, near Port Washington, on Monday. He allegedly swiped the Superior Ambulance when he was being transported between hospitals in Chicago.
The Ozaukee County Sheriff's office said five security guards had strapped Buckner to a gurney, but he somehow escaped.
After he crashed the ambulance, a bystander stopped to help Buckner, and gave him a ride, police said. While driving with Buckner, that person apparently became concerned for his safety, and pulled over to call police. When the passerby got out and called police, Buckner stole the car, and drove away, according to police.
He was arrested a short time later. While at the Ozaukee County Jail, Buckner appeared to suffer a medical emergency, and was taken to the hospital, where he attacked three sheriff's deputies, police said.
Buckner was charged with operating a motor vehicle without owner's consent, and battery to a police officer, and was awaiting extradition back to Illinois, to face additional charges.
