Chicago Gas Prices Still Soaring

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Gas prices nationwide have been holding steady over the last week, at around $3.64 a gallon, but in the Chicago area, prices just keep going up.

WBBM Newsradio's Bernie Tafoya reports the latest survey by GasBuddy.com indicates the average price of gas in Chicago is $4.46 per gallon.

A survey by the AAA Chicago Motor Club pegged gas prices even higher, at $4.59 per gallon.

Robert Knox said he uses a smartphone app to try to find the best gas prices, though he was spending nearly $4.70 on Monday.

"Nowadays, the gas stations are being very competitive with different car washes, and things like that," Knox said. "So you kind of have to shop around now."

Courtney Silas also paid nearly $4.70 a gallon as gassed up her SUV in the South Loop on Monday.

"I think it's completely ridiculous that they're up this high," she said. "You see I have this big truck right here. It takes me about $80 to fill up my car, so I try not to drive anywhere that often."

GasBuddy and AAA said gas prices are up 15 to 17 cents a gallon compared to last week. AAA said current prices are only about 9 cents lower than the highest ever recorded in the area.
