Chicago Coyote Population Growing Bolder
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Experts say coyotes are here to stay with plenty of prey to sustain the growing population.
There are some things you ought to know about the predators.
With a coyote population estimated at around 2,000 in the Chicago area, encounters with people and pets are becoming more common.
Some experiences are showing coyotes are getting bold, showing less fear.
That, experts say, is a problem.
They say you should never run from a coyote. Instead, stand up to them and get loud and wave your arms.
A 12-year study of coyotes in the Chicago area has found that they mostly eat rodents and geese when they can catch them. However, a small percentage of their diet is cats. And, if given the opportunity, they will eat small dogs as well.
