Chicago Cops Among Those Indicted In Drug Shakedowns
HAMMOND, Ind. (AP) - A federal prosecutor says several people, including Latin Kings gang members, a Chicago police officer and former officer, have been indicted on charges of conspiring to operate a violent criminal enterprise that stretched from northwest Indiana to Texas and into Mexico.
U.S. Attorney David Capp says the indictment alleges more than 75 criminal acts by the gang members, including 19 murders, attempted murder, assault and drug and firearm offenses.
Two Chicago police officers were indicted on charges they were paid by Latin King street gang leaders to shake down rival drug dealers. The two Chicago officers, Alex Guerrero and Antonio C. Martinez Jr., were not charged in connection with the homicides.
"It's unspeakable," Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy said at a news conference Friday.
Martinez retired in 2009 for medical reasons, but Guerrero was still on active duty until this week, authorities said.
Capp says six of the people indicted have been charged previously and already were in custody. Twelve others have been arrested and are in custody and police are still looking for two others. One indictment remained sealed.
