Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation spokesman Matt Smith said recycling trees is of great benefit to the environment.

"Twenty-eleven will be the 22nd year for the program, and in that time, we've actually collected and mulched 128,778 Christmas trees," Smith said, "and when you stop to consider that your average Christmas tree takes up as much space in a landfill as a washing machine, you can see how a program like this one makes a real big difference."

Only real trees should be dropped off and must be free of all ornaments, lights, tinsel and stands. Please do not drop off any tree lights, decorations, wreaths, garlands or household recyclables at these locations.
