Chicago CEO's Road To Success Was Hard, But Has Proven To Be Effective
"The National Center for Education Statistics data show that after a year in the workforce, business majors earned about 16 percent more than the average salary for all majors," according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Because so many career paths stem from having a deep understanding of business, there is often a broader range of opportunities offered to those with an educational background in business.
David Nance is the CEO for the Security Equipment Corporation, which manufacturers pepper spray and home and personal safety products for police and consumers. David used his educational background in business and finance to start the SABRE Law Enforcement Training Division, Products Division, College Safety Program and the SABRE Personal Safety Academy.
Nance offers insight into how a degree in business can extend career opportunities into other fields, and how his education has helped him to run a successful company.
What inspired you to go into this field?
"I started the SABRE LE Division and training divisions to increase the safety of officers in the field and make college a safer experience for the 20 million students attending each fall. I created support alliances with the National Breast Cancer Foundation and the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network to support the fantastic charities and create more awareness for them and the major problems they strive to overcome. Working closely with some of the top law enforcement defensive tactics instructors, my programs have certified over 4,500 law enforcement instructors and 400 personal safety instructors worldwide."
How do you feel your educational background has helped in your career?
"As a business/finance major, my college experience taught me how to manage my time, meet deadlines and use available resources to the best of my abilities. I learned how to research, present, communicate and articulate my thoughts in a clear and persuasive manner. It also taught me how to work with others to achieve goals and complete projects successfully."
What advice can you give others looking to go into this field?
"Study hard. Train hard. Do it with passion, and you'll help yourself and many others along the way."
