Chicago Celebrates St. Paddy's Day With River Dyeing, Downtown Parade

(CBS) -- The Chicago River was dyed green and the sun was out for the downtown St. Patrick's Day Parade Saturday.

The weather is expected to be great all weekend, with temps in the mid 50's for Saturday's parade and a high of 58 on Sunday for the South Side Irish Parade.

The downtown parade got underway a little before noon at Columbus and Balbo where thousands of people lined the route.

The celebration started off with the dyeing of the Chicago River Saturday morning, a tradition for over 50 years. Members of the Chicago Plumbers Union Local 130 hopped into motorboats and dumped an orange powder into the river which turns the water a bright green.

The makers say it's harmless to the environment.

The South Side Irish Parade will take place at noon on Sunday. The parade runs along Western Avenue from 103rd to 115th.
