Chicago Bears Fantasy Outlook
Last year's Bears offense did little to help the team win and little to help fantasy team owners win as well. Matt Forte regressed after his stellar rookie campaign prompting some to ask if he was a one hit wonder. After Ron Turner's firing and the hiring of offensive mastermind Mike Martz, there is much more optimism the Forte and company will make great strides towards returning to the playoffs and putting up big numbers along the way. With training camp just a few days away, here is a fantasy outlook for your 2010 Bears.
CBSSports.com fantasy expert Dave Richard sees big things for Cutler this season, according to him Martz's "aggressive, pass-happy style fits [Culter] perfectly" and calls him the team's best fantasy player, a claim few should dispute. In his first year with the Bears Cutler threw for 3,666 yards (2nd all-time in Bears history) and 27 touchdowns (3rd all-time in Bears history) all the while playing for a very unimaginative and unorganized Turner offensive scheme. With Martz implementing his offense and by all accounts raving about the ability of Cutler we can expect a much improved Cutler in the 2010 campaign. Other than Cutler, Forte might be the player most perfectly fits the Martz offense scheme.
From 1999-2005, when Martz was either the offensive coordinator or head coach of the St. Louis Rams, Marshall Faulk averaged 994 rushing yards, 8.3 rushing TDs and 521 receiving yards and 3.9 receiving TDs per season. These numbers are even more impressive when you realize that these were the final 7 seasons of Faulk's career and was 2nd half of his prime leading into the declining ability at the end of his career. Forte, much like Faulk is an exceptional receiver who should flourish in Martz's offense.
