Chicago Artist Picked To Design Artwork For New 95th Street Terminal
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A Chicago artist whose work has been featured around the world has been picked as the head of a major art project for the CTA.
WBBM's Bernie Tafoya reports the CTA said a $1.3 million project to be overseen by Theaster Gates would be the largest public art project in the agency's history.
The CTA Board will vote on the project next week.
If approved, Gates artwork will adorn a new $240 million terminal at the 95th Street Red Line station, which is set to be built next year. The Dan Ryan branch of the Red Line is currently undergoing a five-month reconstruction project.
"This new station will be a showcase destination, offering a modern, safe and pedestrian-friendly transit center with fewer delays and shorter travel times," said CTA President Forrest Claypool. "It will also serve as a vibrant community anchor that will act as a catalyst for new businesses and economic development, creating jobs and complementing a 21st century rider experience."
The CTA has earmarked $1 million for the design and installation of the artwork; $50,00 will go to community engagement, including public meetings; and the remaining $250,000 will be Gates' fee.
The terminal should be completed by 2016.
