Chicago Area Gas Prices Continue Downward Trend

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Even with crude oil prices inching up a bit on Wednesday, Chicago area gas prices have been tumbling.

It's no trick, but a treat at the gas pump this Halloween, with crude oil prices down overall in October, and no refinery problems reported, Chicago area prices are headed lower.

At some suburban stations, prices are as low as $2.05 per gallon. The latest survey by GasBuddy.com found that to be the lowest price in the area.

Senior petroleum analyst Patrick DeHaan predicted prices will go even lower before year's end.

"In Chicago, I think, the city you'll see some stations in the $2.20s, maybe the $2.30s. In the suburbs, you'll see plenty of stations under $2 a gallon," he said.

The Chicago average remained around $2.50 per gallon as of Wednesday, down nearly 30 cents a gallon in the past three weeks, but still well above the national average of $2.20.

Some stations in the city still are charging $3.50 per gallon or more.
