Chicago-Area Companies Plan More Layoffs
CHICAGO (CBS) -- As the economic recovery continues to sputter, several Chicago-area companies have announced plans for more layoffs, starting next month.
A total of seven Illinois companies have filed reports with the state that it plans to lay off a total of more than 600 workers, starting next month.
Among the Chicago-area companies affected: Morgan Stanley, Jewel-Osco, Bistro 110, Emmis Communications and Ryerson.
Morgan Stanley is closing an office in Vernon Hills and will lay off 223 workers by the end of the year.
Emmis Communications, which sold two Chicago radio stations--WKQX-FM and WLUP-FM, is sending pink slips to 78 workers in August.
Jewel-Osco has announced plans to terminate 114 workers as it shutters a store in Olympia Fields next month.
The downtown Chicago restaurant, Bistro 110, is closing and will lay off 82 people in August.
Ryerson is laying off 67 workers as it closes its plant on Chicago's West Side.
The Illinois Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act requires employers to provide 60 days advance notice of pending plant closures or mass layoffs. The law applies to companies with 75 or more employees
