Chelios' Son Hits Blackhawks Prospect Camp
CHICAGO (CBS) -- There are some interesting family ties at the Blackhawks prospect camp going on this week.
The name Chris Calnan might not right a bell, but the Hawks' third round draft pick is former Hawks' star Jeremy Roenick's nephew.
And as CBS 2's Megan Mawicke explains, Jake Chelios' familiar last name makes his bloodlines undeniable.
What's old is new again. Jake Chelios, the son of Chris - the legendary Blackhawk, is trying to catch the coaches eyes. Skating with the Hawks also brings back memories for the 21-year-old of when he used to roam the United Center with his dad. "It's nice to come back here where I grew up, being in that locker room was pretty nostalgic. Even though I was only 8, I remember where everything was (located)," say Jake Chelios.
Jake is a defenseman just like his father, and says there are a few similarities in their games. "The slashing and cross checking, but I don't know if that works anymore. Back in (my dad's) day that was considered a skill set," says Jake Chelios with a smile.
He has fond memories of his dad playing with the Blackhawks, but then Chris moved on to play for Detroit when Jake was 8. The last two years Jake has spent time in Detroit Red Wings' prospect camp. So, putting on which sweater means more to him?
"This one is kind of cool because I grew up in it. I never really had a chance before now," adds Jake.
Jake is used to the comparisons to his dad, but he's trying to make his own impression with the Blackhawks even though he will return to play for Michigan State next year. And his father, whose working for the Red Wings now, has been calling Jake to offer a bit of advice.
"It's just work hard. You're not going to be the most skilled guy when you go out there, but if you work hard usually results will come. It's a really good opportunity and I just want to take advantage of it and make my own name, especially in city like Chicago where you are compared to him," says Jake.
