The Chicago Tribune reports parents who want the best education possible for their children often pin their hopes on magnet schools.
But only about 3,000 students are accepted to those out of 32,000 applicants.
Charter schools are often perceived as the next bastion of excellence. One in every 10 Chicago Public Schools students attends a charter school, and about 12,000 are on waiting lists.
But charter schools are not supported universally. Some complain that they take resources away from neighborhood schools, and represent exclusion rather than choice.
Charter schools receive public funding, but are operated privately. They can restrict admissions, but they are not permitted to charge tuition.
Each charter school has its own curriculum, schedule and admissions process that may differ from traditional public schools.
