William Albrecht Jr. of Hobart was pulled over for speeding late Saturday night in Gary.
Police say Albrecht had hit Paul Williams, 52, outside the Lake Station nursing home where Williams lived. Albrecht's pick-up truck hit Williams with enough force to throw the victim into the bed of the truck
Court records indicate the police officer who stopped Albrecht saw human legs and a pair of blue jeans hanging off the tailgate of Albrecht's pick-up truck.
The windshield was smashed and Albrecht reportedly had pieces of glass on him.
Albrecht allegedly admitted to the officer he had drunk a case of beer and had hit someone with the truck.
But, "The driver apparently had no clue that he actually had the victim in the back of his truck," Lt. John McDaniel said.
Police said they found part of Williams' leg in the 2000 block of Ripley, Lake Station, where he was struck. It happened outside Lake Park Residential Care.
Albrecht is charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated, causing death and failure to stop after an accident resulting in death. According to the Post-Tribune, was way over the minimum for being legally drunk.
