Charges Expected Wednesday Against Hair Salon Robbery Suspect
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Detectives from Chicago and the suburbs believe they finally got their man. Police plan to announce charges on Wednesday for a man arrested in connection with the robberies of more than a dozen local hair salons.
CBS 2's Derrick Blakley reports the suspect was paraded before a series of witnesses for lineup identifications on Tuesday.
Police are expected to identify the suspect at a news conference on Wednesday, as well as the specific charges against him.
Meantime, workers at local salons were hopeful they can go to work without apprehension.
Stylists at the Hair Cuttery in Evanston said they're relieved a suspect in the long string of hair salon robberies has been arrested.
"There's always that element of fear when somebody is out there, and wants to do harm to others," said Hair Cuttery district leader Leslie Ambrose.
The so-called "Bad Hair Bandit" struck at least 13 hair salons in Chicago, Broadview, Lombard, Glen Ellyn, Bensenville, Niles, Morton Grove and Skokie over the past month.
Police said surveillance video from the Jan. 10 robbery at the Super Cuts in Skokie shows the robber in action, brandishing a handgun.
That same day, stylists at the Great Clips in Morton Grove believe the same robber hit their store.
Safete Faka said the robber, holding a gun, put a purse on a desk at the shop, and told employees to put money from the register into the bag. The robber made off with $350 in that heist.
The most recent robbery was Monday at the Great Clips at 1238 N. Ashland Av. in Chicago. Police confirmed the suspect's car was towed away Monday night after he was arrested.
The car was registered to a woman at an Evanston apartment building, but whoever was inside on Tuesday wasn't saying much.
From behind her locked door, the woman inside said, "I'm done. I'm sorry," when asked if she knew who was driving the car Monday night.
It was still unclear Tuesday afternoon how police tracked down the suspect, or if a $1,000 reward for information in the case played a role in the arrest.
