CHA Wins LEED Certification For Rehab Of Senior Apartment Building
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A seniors' public housing project in Uptown has become the first Chicago Housing Authority property to receive the top green building certification.
The U.S. Green Building Council granted LEED platinum certification to The Kenmore, a subsidized apartment building for seniors 62 and older at 5040 N. Kenmore Ave. LEED is short for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design
The Kenmore has been outfitted with plumbing fixtures that conserve water, and rain gardens and a green roof have been added to the building's interior courtyards, the CHA said.
The ground level at The Kenmore now includes a library with a fireplace, a multipurpose room and a fitness center.
The apartments feature low-emitting composite wood, materials with recycled content, and Energy Star appliances.
In addition, smoking has been banned in the building, and a recycling strategy has been developed.
To upgrade the building, the CHA retained the architectural firm Holabird & Root, a descendant of the firm that designed such landmarks as the Chicago Baord of Trade, the Palmolive Building and even City Hall. Holabird & Root provided architectural and LEED consulting assistance for the 90,000 square-foot building, which dates from the 1920s.
The American Society of Interior Designers has also awarded the building with an excellence award in green residential design.
