Castro Struggles; Konerko, Quentin Quiet In All-Star Game
(CBS) The Cubs and White Sox had a combined three players in Tuesday's All-Star Game at Chase Field in Phoenix, but none of them played a large role in the outcome -- a 5-1 win for the National League.
Cubs shortstop Starlin Castro struggled for the most part, striking out in his only at-bat while also committing an error in the ninth inning. Castro entered the game as a pinch runner in the fifth inning and promptly stole second and third base. We was then thrown out at home, however, running on contact on Rickie Weeks' grounder to pitcher Jordan Walden. Walden easily threw Castro out at home.
White Sox outfielder Carlos Quentin was hitless in two at-bats, but reached first in the ninth inning when Castro threw the ball in the dirt and Joey Votto couldn't make the scoop. Quentin advanced to second on the error, but was stranded at third when teammate Paul Konerko grounded out to Castro to end the game. Konerko entered the game in the seventh inning as a pinch hitter for designated hitter David Ortiz. He walked in his first at-bat but did not score.
Quentin entered the game in the bottom of the sixth, relieving Jose Bautista in right field.
