Carroll: Cutler's Injury Different Than Big Ben's
(WSCR) With uncertainty surrounding Jay Cutler's injury and the fate of the Bears' season, injury expert Will Carroll joined The McNeil and Spiegel Show to discuss the extent of Cutler's broken finger.
Both Brett Favre and Ben Roethlisberger played through a fractured thumb, but Carroll said Cutler's injury is different.
"They're different," Carroll said. "You hear fractured thumb and you think, 'A thumb is a thumb is a thumb.' No, it's not. This would be easier on TV. Basically, what Roethlisberger has is at the end (of the thumb). It's toward the nail, but he can still grip. He doesn't have any stability problems. What Cutler has is one up toward where it meets the hand in the big, very articulating joint. ... If the bone separates from the hand, you've got a real problem. It looks like they're going to have to go in an fix it, put some pins in there and make sure it heals correctly. Normally, that takes 6-8 weeks to heal it up."
