Carpentersville Wonders How To Handle Drivers After Cutting Crossing Guards
CARPENTERSVILLE, Ill. (CBS) -- The crossing guards are gone in Carpentersville, and village officials are trying to figure out how to get children safely to and from school.
As WBBM Newsradio 780's Regine Schlesinger reports, after a heated debate, the Carpentersville village board voted last spring to lay off five school crossing guards in order to cut $40,000 years from the budget this year, the Daily Herald reported.

The school district, Community Unit District 300, said it didn't have the money to pay the crossing guards either. But the district pleaded with the village board not to do away with the crossing guards, the newspaper reported.
Now, the village board is considering ways to slow down drivers near three elementary schools, in lieu of crossing guards. It is studying whether to put in speed bumps, traffic roundabouts, or other ways to keep drivers from speeding through.
The Daily Herald says it is unlikely any option will be in place in time for the start of school this fall.
