Carpenter To Start Game 7 For Cards; Holliday Out
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Chris Carpenter will start on three days' rest in Game 7 of the World Series for the St. Louis Cardinals.
The team confirmed manager Tony La Russa's selection for the deciding game against the Texas Rangers several hours before the first pitch Friday night.
Carpenter started on short rest in the first round of the NL playoffs against the Phillies and lasted only three innings. The 36-year-old right-hander said after Game 6 that he'd be ready for the matchup against Texas' Matt Harrison.
La Russa could have chosen Kyle Lohse or Edwin Jackson, both well rested, but leaned on his ace.
Meanwhile, Cardinals outfielder Matt Holliday will miss Game 7 of the World Series.
Rookie Adron Chambers will replace Holliday on the active roster Friday, a day after Holliday injured his right hand during the Cardinals' 10-9, 11-inning victory over Texas in Game 6.
The team says Holliday has a sprained right wrist. Originally, the Cardinals said he bruised his right pinkie sliding into third base when he was picked off base by catcher Mike Napoli in the sixth inning.
Chambers is 1 for 5 with two RBIs during the postseason.
