Carjacking Suspect Shot Dead By Police
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A suspected carjacker is dead after a police-involved shooting in the city's Far South Side.
Police were called to the Roseland neighborhood near 105th and State streets around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday. A suspect had carjacked a pickup truck outside a fast food restaurant at the intersection, police said.
Chicago Fraternal Order of Police spokesman Pat Camden said police got involved in the incident when the carjacking victim flagged down a squad car and gave a description of the suspect and his pickup. About 10 minutes later, officers in another squad car saw the truck, he said.
"He was pretty sure it was the wanted vehicle, so he calls it in,'' Camden said of the officer who spotted the pickup.
The officer asked for more cars, but the pickup "took off" so the officers began a chase.

The short pursuit ended at 105th Street and Lafayette Avenue when the pickup plowed into a tree and spun out of control, Camden said. Its sole occupant got out and started running, he said.
"Officers chased him through the alley, through a gangway, actually tackled the offender. He got up and started running again, reaching for his side," Camden said. "At that point, the officer, in fear of his life, fired a shot and hit the offender."
The 18-year-old male suspect, who lived in the 10500 block of South Lafayette Avenue, was pronounced dead at 1:12 a.m. at the scene, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office. His identity has not been released.
The Independent Police Review Authority is investigating.
