CHICAGO (CBS) -- All inbound lanes of the Dan Ryan Expressway on the South Side were closed for more than two hours as police investigated a crash that killed a woman and sent two children to a hospital in critical condition Wednesday afternoon.
The crash happened on the westbound Dan Ryan Expressway (I-94) near 73rd Street about 2:15 p.m., Illinois State Police said. The car crashed into a stalled school bus on the shoulder, then slid under it.
CBS 2's Kris Habermehl reports that at least one of the victims had to be extricated from the car and emergency crews needed to use large air bags to lift the bus off of the car after the crash.
Two children, passengers in the car, were taken to University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital in serious to critical condition, Fire Media Affairs spokesman Will Knight said.
A female driver was dead at the scene, State Police said.
No children were aboard the school bus and the bus driver was not injured, State Police said.
Inbound lanes of I-94 were shut down at 73rd Street but were re-opened at 4:25 p.m., State Police said.
