Car Slams Into Fire Vehicle Headed To Blaze
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A car slammed into a fire squad company on the city's West Side, as the company raced to the scene of a fire 2 1/2 miles away.
As CBS 2's Kris Habermehl reports, a rubbish fire was burning during the 6 a.m. hour at a warehouse on Cicero Avenue just north of Roosevelt Road. Although flames were visible on the outside of the building, the fire turned out to be minor.
But on the way to the scene, a Fire Department squad company vehicle was broadsided by a car at the intersection of Cicero Avenue and Division Street.
The squad company vehicle was one of several fire vehicles headed south on Cicero Avenue, while the car was headed east on Division Street.
The car was demolished, and the driver was taken to an area hospital. The driver's condition was not immediately learned.
Other fire vehicles responded to the scene, where emergency medical technicians examined the squad company. The firefighters who had been in the vehicle appeared to be uninjured, but the vehicle was seriously damaged.
Southbound Cicero Avenue was blocked at the scene after the crash. Northbound Cicero remained open.
