Car Flies Off I-94 In Portage, Crashes Onto Road Below
PORTAGE, Ind. (STMW) -- A 25-year-old man who had been playing poker all night with friends and who was believed to have been intoxicated was seriously injured when his car went airborne and flipped over onto a road below I-94 in northwest Indiana on Wednesday.
At about 10:52 a.m., the man was driving a 2010 Toyota Camry west on I-94 near the 19.5 mile marker, just east of the Portage exit.
According to Indiana State Police, a witness said the Toyota was weaving from the right lane to the middle and the driver's head was shaking from side to side.
For unknown reasons the Toyota went off the roadway to the north, into the grass, behind the guard rail, and through a fence. It then went fell about 75 feet before it nose-dived onto Jensen Road (a north/south road that runs under I-94), police said.
The Camry landed on its top in the middle of Jensen Road and the driver had to be extricated. He was taken to Porter Hospital in Valparaiso with internal and possible head injuries. He was not wearing a seatbelt and alcohol was a factor in the crash, police said.
It was later learned that the driver had been playing poker all night with friends, according to police. Charges are pending.
