Canucks' Rome Suspended Four Games For Late Hit
CHICAGO (CBS) In Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Finals, Aaron Rome delivered a late hit to Boston Bruins forward Nathan Horton. The hit resulted in Horton losing consciousness and had to be taken off the ice on a stretcher.
On Tuesday, the league announced that Rome, who was given a five-minute major penalty for interference and game misconduct, was suspended for four games, meaning he'll miss the rest of the Stanley Cup Finals should it go to seven games.
"Two factors were considered in reaching this decision," said NHL Senior Vice President of Hockey Operations Mike Murphy. "The hit by Rome was clearly beyond what is acceptable in terms of how late it was delivered after Horton had released the puck and it caused a significant injury."
If the Stanley Cup Finals don't go to a full seven games, the suspension will carry over to the start of the 2011-12 season.
As of Tuesday morning, Horton was still in the hospital.
