Candidates For Illinois Governor Focus On Jobs
(CBS) -- The candidates for governor on Friday were pulling out all the stops in the final days of campaign 2014.
Democrat Pat Quinn was in Chicago, while Republican Bruce Rauner was in the suburbs.
CBS 2 Chief Correspondent Jay Levine says both hopefuls hammered away at what has become the key issue: jobs.
Levine had questions for both candidates, but came away without much in the way of answers.
Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel appeared with Quinn as hundreds of newly hired Safe Passage workers gathered on taxpayer time to talk about jobs made possible by a $10 million grant from the incumbent governor.
"I've been looking for a job for eight years. Safe Passage finally gave me one," Gloria Jones said.
The mayor made it clear who they had to thank for those jobs. The jobs pay $10 an hour to protect school children -- and attend the Friday rally.
Levine asked Quinn whether that was an appropriate use of taxpayer resources. The governor said the worker orientation was happening, anyway.
Quinn again attacked his Republican opponent, a businessman, for being a master of downsizing work forces.
Rauner disagreed with that assessment.
