Calumet City Man Charged With Murder In Teen Girl's Shooting Death
(STMW) -- A south suburban man was charged with murder Thursday for allegedly opening fire into a Calumet City home and fatally shooting a teenage girl.
Eric Anthony Brown, 20, of Calumet City, has been charged with one count each of first-degree murder and aggravated battery with a firearm, Calumet City police said Thursday.
Brown is accused of firing into a Calumet City home Sunday night, killing 15-year-old Ashaya Miller and wounding a 19-year-old man.
Miller and the man were in the kitchen area of a home in the 500 block of Ingraham Avenue in Calumet City when someone came into the gangway and fired shots into a window about 9:30 p.m. Sunday, Calumet City Police Chief Edward Gilmore said.
Miller was shot twice in the back, Gilmore said. She was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn where she died at 11:13 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
A Monday autopsy found Miller, of Hammond, Ind., died of multiple gunshot wounds and her death was ruled a homicide, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
The man who was with her in the kitchen was struck in the elbow and was also taken to Christ Medical Center for treatment.
There were about 10 people, including an adult resident, in the home at the time, Gilmore said. The people inside weren't there for a party or similar gathering, but they were just visiting with each other.
Police said Thursday they do not believe the teen girl was the intended target.
Brown is expected to appear for a bond hearing Friday morning in Markham.
