Harris: Byrd Says Beaning 'Could've Been Worse'
By Adam Harris--
CHICAGO (CBS) In the second inning of Saturday night's game at Fenway park, Chicago Cubs outfielder Marlon Byrd was hit by a pitch under his left eye. It was a scary situation for Byrd and his teammates, but looking back on it, Byrd may actually be lucky.
"I have my vision, no brain damage, so it could've been worse," Byrd said. "No complaints."
The moments immediately after the beaning were tense, it appeared as if Byrd was in a lot of pain. However, it wasn't pain from being hit with an Alfredo Aceves fastball that was concerning Byrd.
"I started kicking because I realize I couldn't see out of my eye," he said. "That's something I'm not used to, but then I got up and started walking towards the dugout, and was telling [trainer Ed Halbur] 'I can't see.'"
Byrd said that he wasn't upset with getting it, he said that it wasn't intentional and that it's "part of the game."
The Cubs ended up winning Saturday's game, but would ultimately lose the series.
Reliever Justin Berg replaced Byrd on the roster.
