Byrd: 'Everything's Healing Fine'
CHICAGO (WSCR) Every time a batter steps to the plate there's a chance that they'll get hit with a pitch. And by the time they reach the the majors, players have been hit countless times. But very few every get hit like Cubs outfielder Marlon Byrd did at Fenway Park.
In the second inning of the May 21 game agaisnt the Red Sox, Byrd was hit below his left eye by a pitch from Alfredo Aceves.
Byrd temporarily lost vision in his left eye and was taken to the hospital for observation.
Over the last week, he's been seeing eye specialists and plastic surgeons, all trying to get Byrd healthy and back on the field.
For the first time since being hit by the pitch, Byrd talked publicly about his health and recovery from a scary incident.
"It's healing," Byrd said on the Mully and Hanley Show. "You know, [doctors] were worried about the blood in the eye, the clotting of the blood in the eye and re-bleeding. There was no re-bleeding. The clot, everything's healing fine, but it's just a little slowly.
"When you have a blunt trauma like that, you know, they get real scared. The retina was still attached, there was bruising, they were worried about that too, but so far, everything is on the up and up as far as healing."
