Busy Holiday Weekend To Kick Off Summer Travel Season
CHICAGO (CBS) -- The busy summer travel season got underway on Thursday, as many travelers got an early start to the Memorial Day weekend.
WBBM Newsradio's Bernie Tafoya reports Derrick Williams was at Midway International Airport on Thursday, headed to Las Vegas for a five-day weekend.
Williams said he was looking forward to warm weather and winning big.
Holiday Travel To Keep Airports Busy
Jim and Amy Jackson were in a great mood as they prepared to board a flight to Florida.
"A week in Key West," Jim said. "It's going to be a good, relaxing vacation, so we're looking forward to it."
City officials said, between Thursday and Tuesday, approximately 1.5 million travelers would pass through Midway and O'Hare International Airport. Friday was expected to be the busiest day for both airports.
For the Memorial Day weekend, both airports will have commemorative wreaths – at the Battle of Midway exhibit at Midway, and the Butch O'Hare exhibit at O'Hare.
The city's Aviation Department also has announced a deal with Boingo to provide free Wi-Fi service at to a few dozen websites – including some airline sites, travel sites, and Facebook – at both airports.
