Business Owner Offers Chicago IT Support, Outsourcing Solutions

Chad Holstead, owner of BKS Systems, offers some insight into the growing IT field, for those considering a career as a computer support specialist. Business Knowledge Systems is an information technology and management consulting firm, providing services that allow clients to focus on their business operations as BKS manages their technology environment. BKS offers IT support services and IT outsourcing solutions to middle-market clients, as well as IT due diligence services to the investment community.
How has your education helped to further your career?
"I have a Bachelor's of Science in applied computer science, with a minor in business administration. This prepared me for the ability to continue to learn. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't learn something new. Yes, many of the concepts and technologies I was taught in college are either antiquated or not used any more. However, the ability to see the concepts and learn the application is what I really took away from college."
What are your thoughts on the changes in the field of IT?
"The IT field has changed drastically in the last couple of years, especially for the small and mid-market companies. Over the last two years, cloud services have really become affordable and the price of bandwidth has gone down as well. The ability for a mid-market company to have enterprise level cloud services and still be well within budget has been the major change that has affected our customers as of recently."
What advice can you offer others looking to go into the field of technology?
"I recommend staying in school to obtain a degree. Once out of school, don't be afraid to try different jobs. The technology field is wide enough to fit every type of person. From sales to development to design; if you can dream it, there is job out there for you."
