Bus Fares Up In Gary, Ind.
GARY, Ind. (WBBM) -- It now costs more to ride a bus in Gary, Ind.
As WBBM Newsradio 780's Bob Conway reports, fare increases for the Gary Public Transportation Corporation were approved last month, and area now in effect.

This was the first fare hike since the 1990s. Local routes now cost $1.60 and regional routes $2.25. Fares will remain the same for paratransit services.
The new fare structure also drops the 15-cent charge for transfers.
Riders are reminded that although transfers are free, policies for using them remain unchanged. A two-hour time limit will is still to be enforced, and riders may not use transfers to travel in different directions on the same route.
Meanwhile, Saturday service may be eliminated in June if the funding situation for Gary transit does not improve. A drop in property tax revenues resulting from the state's tax caps continues to cut into the funding for the agency.
