Burglary Suspect In Custody After Scaling Razor Wire Fence At O'Hare International Airport
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A burglary suspect was in custody after he climbed a fence at O'Hare International Airport while fleeing from police, and was discovered cut and bleeding at a hangar on the airfield.
Sources said a small group of burglars smashed through a brick wall at the T-Mobile store on Irving Park Road in Hanover Park early Tuesday morning, and crawled inside to steal whatever valuables they could get their hands on.
The three burglars then fled the scene, and tried to make their getaway by driving east, sources said.
Police chased them through the suburbs until they made it as far as the western edge of O'Hare, at Thorndale Avenue and York Road, where the burglars' Kia crashed into a ditch.
One of the burglars scaled the fence at O'Hare, cutting himself on the razor wire. He made his way onto the airfield, where he was spotted in a Delta Air Lines hangar. The suspect was barefoot and bloody.
A gym shoe was later recovered, struck in the razor wire atop the fence.
The suspect, who has a criminal record dating back to 2009. Police took the man into custody, and an ambulance took him to AMITA Health Resurrection Medical Center for treatment.
Sources said the suspect was caught with two brand new phones still in their boxes, and he was not cooperating with investigators. It's unclear if the phones police recovered were from the T-Mobile store, but sources said the man has a criminal history that includes burglaries.
The other two suspects remained on the loose Tuesday afternoon.
