Burglary Suspect Arrested After Pointing Gun At Cops
CHICAGO (STMW) -- A burglary suspect was charged Wednesday with aggravated assault of a police officer after being shot when he allegedly pointed a gun at officers during a Monday night chase through the West Side.
Terrance Shelton, 25, of the 1200 block of South Keeler Avenue was charged with three counts of aggravated assault of a police officer with a firearm, burglary, attempting to flee or elude police, disobeying a police order, and operating an uninsured vehicle, according to a police News Affairs release.
The officers had been involved in a car chase with the burglary suspect when he got out of his vehicle about 7:30 p.m. Monday in the 5300 block of West Congress Parkway and began to run, pointing a handgun at the officers chasing him, according to a statement from police News Affairs.
Police fired at the suspect, and opened fire a second time "in fear of their lives" after the suspect fled into a gangway, climbed a gate and again pointed the gun at officers, the statement said.
He continued to flee and was arrested a short time later hiding on the roof in the 5300 block of West Harrison Street, police said.
Police News Affairs Officer Ron Gaines confirmed the suspect had been shot by police and was taken to an area hospital.
The Independent Police Review Authority, which investigates all police-involved shootings, confirmed an officer fired a weapon.
No police officers were hurt, and officials continue to investigate whether any other suspects were involved with the chase, according to police News Affairs.
Fraternal Order of Police spokesman Pat Camden said the incident started about 7:30 p.m. Monday near South Western Avenue and West 26th Street when an officer in an unmarked vehicle saw a person loading boxes into a van. The officer called for a marked police car but the van drove away and police followed.
The westbound van crashed into a marked police vehicle traveling east in the 5300 block of West Harrison Street before the suspect, the driver of the van, jumped out and began running, Camden said.
The suspect suffered a gunshot wound to the ankle and was taken to Loretto Hospital, Camden said.
Shelton is expected to appear Thursday in bond court at 26th Street and California Avenue.
